Norse Idun - Black/White

Paddling the Norse Idun

Norse Idun Sea Kayak

Composite Sea Kayak for Small-Medium Sized Paddlers

The Norse Idun is a slightly smaller version of the popular Norse Bylgja with the same Greenland inspired design, the Idun draws its name from the Norse Godess of Spring and rejuvenation. It is a playful and versatile kayak designed for lighter paddlers and has enough stability for progressing paddlers to feel at home on water whilst also having a level of responsiveness in lively seas which will keep expert paddlers smiling. The hull has a tight V-shape hull at the bow and stern so it cuts through chop and makes it easy to maintain speed and direction. The 'vacuum bagged' construction method provides a strong lightweight build and the Idun's hull is reinforced with aramid along the keel line and rails which provides impressive rigidity on the water.

There are three storage compartments separated by rigid bulkhead walls one of which is close behind the seat so minimising the amount of water left in the hull should you need to do a self rescue. Two of the storage areas are accessed by large hatches while the third has a small hatch just behind the cockpit providing easy on the water access for items like a cagoule, snacks etc. There is also a convenient small hatch in front of the cockpit which gives access to a mesh bag which is ideal for stowing the smaller items you need while paddling. There is certainly enough storage on-board for multi day camping expeditions and the kayak paddles very well fully loaded.

The rear deck has storage designed for a Greenland storm stick or a norsaq reflecting the Greenland influence, this also provides a place to stow a bilge pump or paddle float. The cockpit is fairly generous at the front which makes wet launches and solo re-entry on the water relatively easy. The deck fittings and compass mount are both recessed so the upper deck is sleek and stylish. The Storage hatches are well-designed and renowned for being hard wearing. The signature printed seam tape with Viking motifs is an example of the attention to detail typical of Norse designs.

The Idun paddles well on flat water and with a V shaped hull and hard chines it responds well in lively seas and rough conditions. Intermediate paddlers will find that edging over onto the chines is confidence inspiring and they will be able to hold an edge with ease and control the arc of turn with small weight adjustments. Advanced paddlers will find this kayak to be reliable, responsive and well able to cope with a wide range of sea conditions. These characteristics reflect the Norse heritage - The Idun is designed to cope with seas which are often like glass high up in the fjords but which can be wild on the more open coastlines. This suits the Idun to UK sea kayaking with our unpredictable and ever changing weather.

All of this at an unbeatable price for a composite sea kayak - you really can't get any better!
