Norse Bylgja Sea Kayak
£1799.00 — £2499.00
Composite Sea Kayaks - Designed in Norway
The Norse Bylgja is a Greenland inspired sea kayak which draws its name from a Norse legendary figure who takes the form of an ocean wave. It is made for travelling the seas and riding the ocean swells so feels totally at home out on open water, it also paddles very well on flat calm waters too. The 'vacuum bagged' construction method provides for a lightweight build however the aramide reinforcing on the keel line and rails give this hull excellent rigidity too.
There are three storage compartments separated by rigid bulkhead walls one of which is close behind the seat so minimising the amount of water left in the hull should you need to do a self rescue. Two of the storage areas are accessed by large hatches while the third has a small hatch just behind the cockpit so provides easy on the water access for items like a cagoule, snacks etc. There is also a convenient small hatch in front of the cockpit providing access to a mesh bag which is ideal for stowing the smaller items you need while paddling. There is certainly enough storage on-board for multi day camping expeditions and the kayak paddles very well fully loaded.
The rear deck has storage bungees designed for a storm Greenland stick or a norsaq and which are also handy for taking a bilge pump or paddle float along. The cockpit opening is relatively broad up front so allows larger paddlers to enter seat first then bring their legs on board which makes a wet launch or a solo re-entry on the water relatively easy. The deck fittings and compass mount are both recessed so the upper deck is sleek and stylish. The Storage Hatches are all well-designed and renowned for being hard wearing. The signature printed seam tape with Viking motifs is an example of the attention to detail typical of Norse designs.
The Bylgja is very efficient on the water with great glide and tracking and cuts through choppy seas almost effortlessly due to the long waterline and tight V at the bow and stern. Intermediate paddlers will find that edging over onto the chines is confidence inspiring and they will be able to hold an edge with ease and control the arc of turn with small weight adjustments. Advanced paddlers will find this kayak to be reliable, responsive and well able to cope with a wide range of sea conditions. The Bylgja is designed to cope with seas which are often like glass high up in the fjords but which can be wild on the more open coastlines. This suits the Bylgja to UK sea kayaking conditions with our changeable and often unpredictable weather. The 10 inch skeg is easily controlled from the cockpit and retracts on contact just in case you forget that it is down when you get nearer the dry stuff. You are unlikely to need the full length of the skeg during most trips but it is reassuring to know that even in very strong winds you have enough there to keep you on course in adverse conditions and should you fancy fitting a sail kit you will find the skeg very useful!
The Norse Bylgja has plenty of room inside and is suited for the mid to large paddler, easily taking up to 110kg plus kit.
