P&H Volan 158 & 160
Prices: £2995.00 — £5962.00
Lightweight Composite Performance Sea Kayak
The P&H Volan hits the sweet spot for length and weight that is ideal for covering a fair bit of distance while also being nimble and agile when needed. It has been designed for paddlers looking for a kayak that works well as a day boat and has enough volume to stow sufficient compact camping kit for a night or two away.
The carefully designed hull profile makes this one of the most versatile kayaks on the market. If you want to play it will play, if you want to journey it will do that too and if you find some play spots on your journey you can just engage and start smiling. The bow has enough rocker and upper deck rise to minimise purling and the low profile rear deck is ergonomically designed to assist rolling and re-entry. The bow deck geometry is designed to provide stiffness and strength for deep water rescues and kitted out with full deck lines & elastics for versatile storage and rescue options.
The mid-range length provides ample hull speed for most adventures, and helps keep weight to an absolute minimum for nimble performance and easy handling.
The Volan is available in a range of colour and build options so you can design a look and weight to suit your individual taste. We have added just a few of the various colour combinations below - there are many more options available.
Staff Review
Staff member Ian had a 10 mile run in the Volan, 5 miles out against the wind then back with a soft messy following sea off the SE Cornish coast. Fairly gentle conditions but with enough sea to get the feel of what this well crafted kayak is capable of.
Some kayaks you get in an need a few mins of hip wiggles and checking how it edges to get the feel of the thing but the Volan was just a get in and go - it feels great from the first moment. On the flat it has plenty of glide, responses to control input feel very precise with those well defined rails carving beautifully. Heading directly into a bit of chop it behaved impeccably and kept a good pace going, the wind was stronger than it looks in the video but I didn't feel the need to use any skeg.
Running back with a messy following sea the energy pockets were short lived but the Volan picked up rides with little effort and its agility was impressive. I left the skeg up all the way back and again there was that strong sense of precision from control input which I think was partly due to the widest point being right on my hips. I would have liked a bit more sea, and the time to cover twice that distance or more, but this was enough to whet my apetite for sure.
When a kayak is this stable, efficient and reassuringly responsive the paddler very rapidly builds a rapport with it and there is that sense of being very much in tune with the watercraft and the sea.
